Vrijwilligers organiseerden zaterdag een solidariteitsbarbecue op de parking van de Ekerse GB. De organisatoren eisen het behoud van de buurtwinkel.
Aan GB Ekeren voerden klanten, buurtbewoners en personeelsleden zaterdagnamiddag actie. Gebruikmakend van het zomerse weer organiseerde het Comité Andere Politiek (CAP) een barbecue op de parking van het warenhuis. De vestiging is namelijk een van de zestien GB's die met sluiting wordt bedreigd, waardoor in het totaal 900 mensen op straat komen te staan.
Marijke Tilly (44) werkte achttien jaar lang bij GB en hielp deze winkel mee opstarten. "GB wil de filialen waarschijnlijk verzelfstandigen waardoor de prijzen fors zullen stijgen en werknemers een kwart minder verdienen. De directie gaat dan lopen met alle winst."
De actievoerders kregen de steun van werknemers van Opel. Zo is Jan Kruyniers (44) uit Ekeren vakbondsafgevaardigde bij General Motors en voorzitter van het buurtcomité van de wijk. "Ik werk al 24 jaar bij Opel, één jaar te weinig om op de ontslagpremie te kunnen rekenen. Met de sluiting van deze GB komt de hele buurt nog maar eens bedrogen uit."
Aan de barbecue lag een petitie waar iedereen op kon intekenen om de sluiting van de winkel aan te klagen. Tot nu toe verzamelde CAP 2.000 handtekeningen. Want buurtbewoners reageren teleurgesteld op het verdwijnen van hun lokale supermarkt. Ze zijn vaak minder mobiel en hebben het niet altijd even breed. Rita Devree (52) woont dichtbij en at zaterdag een lekker kippenbilletje en een slaatje op de parking. "Voor ons is deze winkel heel belangrijk", legt Rita uit. "Waar moeten bejaarden in de toekomst naartoe? Het is onbegrijpelijk dat deze winkel werd gerenoveerd om hem vervolgens te sluiten. Aan de kassa's hangt er trouwens nog altijd een oproep om extra personeelsleden."
